[edit] Background

Chase was a very competent military officer, as evident by him successfully completing the Alaska campaign, but his personality was highly controversial. The General was responsible for commissioning the Liberty Prime project, as a solution to the Chinese problem in Anchorage, despite reports from RobCo and General Atomics researchers that such a combat robot was simply not feasible. Another one of his accomplishments is the making and distribution of the drug Psycho during the war to soldiers with his company General Chase R&D.

Furthermore, after January 2077, it seems he became increasingly arrogant and self-absorbed, to the point of personally overseeing the VSS project responsible for creating the Anchorage simulation, making alterations and demands that resulted in the simulation eventually becoming completely detached from what actually happened in Anchorage.

Chase was also responsible for green lighting the unofficial implementation of a military Chinese invasion training protocol in Vault 112 Tranquility Lane simulation, at the request of Stanislaus Braun. However, officially, the request was denied.

According to the ribbons on the general's uniform, he was the recipient of the: Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Army Distinguished Service Cross, Army Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Antarctica Service Medal, Armed Forces, Expeditionary Medal, Gold Lifesaving Medal, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal.

[edit] Notes

  • A terminal located in the Outcast Outpost reveals that he ordered the scientists to constantly re-do the simulation until it "felt right", aggravating his subordinates to the point where they noted it in their progress reports, doubting his sanity. This is probably post-traumatic stress, or is the fact that the man was full of himself/vain due to his high rank.
  • He is also mentioned in the Failsafe Program Documentation in Tranquility Lane. Once you have gained access to the terminal in the abandoned house, before initiating the "Chinese invasion" simulation read the document underneath which explains that Dr. Braun asked for the simulation and was subsequently given the program, after being officially denied.
  • He was also responsible for the creation of the drug Psycho, and it was originally designed to increase the combat potential of soldiers.
  • He cannot be pickpocketed.
  • The player can find a "General Chase's Overcoat" on the spaceship in the Mothership Zeta expansion.
  • He is the only NPC in the game that smokes a Cigar.
  • Fort Constantine is named after him.
  • A package containing his overcoat was beamed in by Mothership Zeta.

[edit] Quotes

"I'll stick my boot up your candy ass."

[edit] Behind the scenes

  • His first name is possibly a reference to Constantine the Great, the Byzantine General and Emperor whose reign more or less announced the rise of the Byzantine Empire; however, his last name is probably a reference to Salmon P. Chase, the 25th Secretary of the Treasury and 6th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. This is similar to Colonel Augustus Autumn, whose first name is likely a reference to the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus.
  • His personality might be based upon real life U.S. General George S. Patton.
  • His line about sticking his combat boot in your "candy ass" may be in reference to a line often used by ex-pro-wrestler Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson.

[edit] Appearances

General Constantine Chase appears in Fallout 3 through historical references via computer terminals, as well as in the military simulation in the Operation: Anchorage add-on. Articles relating to this character date back prior to the war.
