Now just hold on. I never voted to take on the Powder Gangers. That's a 1000 cap investment you're talking about.

Chet is a store clerk living in Goodsprings in 2281.

Background[]

A long-time Goodsprings inhabitant, Chet has been running the local general store for years, managing to make ends meet thanks to traders visiting the local water source and stocking up on supplies. Chet claims to have been to the New Vegas Strip twice in his life. Both times, he apparently drank "a lot of liquor" and lost most of his caps while gambling, in that order. He speaks fondly of the city (especially of Gomorrah), however, he also warns the Courier not to stir up any trouble on account of the NCR and Mr. House's Securitrons.[1]

Chet is very knowledgeable on what he sells, particularly the weapons, mods and ammo.[2][3] Chet also helps in identifying Benny as a "New Vegas-type, typical city boy" and his hired guns as Great Khans, informed about their prolific activity in the Mojave region as a major chem supplier.[4][5] Despite visiting Vegas twice, he knows next to nothing about Mr. House other than he owns the Lucky 38 and orders the Three Families, but assumes that Victor has some ties to Mr. House and that "if Mr. House is looking after you, that's gotta be a good thing, right?"[6]

Chet is a very self-centered person, caring little about the plight of others while upholding the veneer of looking out for the town. With the case of Ringo and the Powder Gangers, he believes handing Ringo over is the best course of action to keep Goodsprings from getting involved. He doesn't believe this to be "coward talk," justifying it that the town of Goodsprings is made up of survivors but don't go looking for trouble.[7][8] However, if his life or business is at risk, Chet quickly capitulates to assisting, either those that are defending or attacking Goodsprings.[9][10]

Quests[]

Effects of player's actions[]

  • If the Courier completes the quest Run Goodsprings Run, Chet, afraid of the Powder Gangers, will give the player character a 50% discount "as long as he gets to keep his shop."[11]
  • If the player character has a mixed reputation (at least "Mixed"), he will give a 25% discount (allowing for a maximum of 75%) because they remind him of himself when he came to town.[12]

Inventory[]

Notes[]

  • Chet will always have one .38 special ammo box and at least one bulk small energy cell ammo box available for sale whenever his inventory is restocked. Because of this, Chet is the only source of boxed .38 special rounds in the Mojave Wasteland.
  • The player character can find all the weapon mods for the varmint rifle, 9mm pistol and .357 Magnum revolver in his shop inventory. If no mods are available, wait for the store to restock (four in-game days). The player character might have to buy a previous mod for a new one to be stocked.
  • Killing him after Run Goodsprings Run grants no Karma gain or loss.
  • He is generally a good merchant early on in the game, as he carries a wide selection of low to mid-level equipment and general use items.

Appearances[]

Chet appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.

Bugs[]

  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Chet will not restock, even after 200+ in-game days. The only item refreshing is special ammunition. You can get his stock to refresh by saving in the store, quitting the game and loading with "continue," simply loading a quicksave will not work.[verified]
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Chet is susceptible to the Run Goodsprings Run quest exploit.[verified]
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Chet may occasionally offer full barter value for items regardless of the Courier's Barter skill or reputation. It is unknown what causes this.[verified]

References[]

  1. The Courier: "Have you ever been to New Vegas?"
Chet: "Twice. Both times, I drank a lot of liquor and lost most of my caps at the card tables. In that order, now that I think about it. If you ever get to New Vegas, be sure to visit Gomorrah. It's the best casino in the city. You won't regret it. Word of advice - behave. Between the NCR military police and Mr. House's robots, you don't want to be causing trouble on the Strip."
    (Chet's dialogue)
  2. The Courier: "Tell me about weapon mods and special ammo."
Chet: "Weapon mods are things like silencers, scopes, bigger magazines. Special ammo includes things like armor-piercing bullets which don't hurt the target as much but let you punch through armor easier. There's also hollowpoint bullets which have the opposite effect - you can kill unarmored targets easier, but they don't do shit against armor."
    (Chet's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "What makes the surplus ammo inferior?"
Chet: "It's all about quantity over quality. Trouble is, you'll be cleaning and fixing your gun a lot more than usual when you use those kind of bullets."
    (Chet's dialogue)
  4. The Courier: "Do you know anything about the people who attacked me?"
Chet: "The leader was a New Vegas-type, typical city boy. He had a bunch of Great Khans with him, probably hired guns. The Great Khans normally stay in their own territory way up northwest, on account of them being enemies with the NCR."
    (Chet's dialogue)
  5. The Courier: "Anything else you can tell me about Great Khans?"
Chet: "They're tough sons of bitches, mean but not crazy - they'll leave you alone unless you've got something they want. The Great Khans deal in illegal chems. There's a good chance that most chems you come across were made by Great Khans."
    (Chet's dialogue)
  6. The Courier: "I'd like to know more about Mr. House."
Chet: "I'm afraid I don't know much myself. Mr. House has got his own casino, the Lucky 38, but nobody goes in or out except his robots. The other casinos follow Mr. House's rules, so I guess that makes him the leader of New Vegas. As far as I know, nobody's ever laid eyes on the guy. I think that robot who pulled you out of the dirt belongs to Mr. House. If Mr. House is looking after you, that's gotta be a good thing, right?"
    (Chet's dialogue)
  7. The Courier: "What do you know about the situation with the Powder Gangers?"
Chet: "If Ringo doesn't head out on his own, I think we should hand him over. The town shouldn't get itself mixed into the problem. Don't mistake that for coward talk, though. We're a town of survivors, and we'll fight tooth and nail if pushed, but we don't go looking for trouble."
    (Chet's dialogue)
  8. The Courier: "The town's at stake. That has to be worth more than a few supplies."
Chet: "[FAILED] Look, you're bringing this on yourselves. There's no way I'm getting involved. But, hey, I'm sure you can buy what you need..."
    (Chet's dialogue)
  9. The Courier: "[Barter 25] Let them take over the town, then. I'm sure your business will be much better off."
Chet: "[SUCCEEDED] You made your point. I can provide people with some leather armor and extra ammo. I sure hope it's worth it. And, uh, I'll be guarding the store while all this is going on. I have to put my business first, you understand."
    (Chet's dialogue)
  10. The Courier: "[Speech 25] This is your chance to join the winning side. You have three seconds to decide. One..."
Chet: "[SUCCEEDED] All right! I can give you some of my extra leather armor and spare ammo. Just don't hurt anybody if you don't have to, all right?"
    (Chet's dialogue)
  11. Chet: "I won't make any trouble for the gang. Just let me keep my store and I'll cut you a little discount."
    (Chet's dialogue)
  12. The Courier: "Show me what you have for sale."
Chet: "I respect the way you've conducted yourself around here. Reminds me of myself in some ways. From now on, you want to buy from Chet's, I'll give you wholesale prices."
    (Chet's dialogue)
