For the NCR Ranger cut from the game, see Chauncey (NCR Rangers). |
Chauncey is a member of the White Glove Society and resides at the Ultra-Luxe in 2281.
Background
Chauncey objects to Mortimer's attempts to capture humans and serve them to customers of the Ultra-Luxe hotel, and consequently tries to help you to stop him in the quest Beyond the Beef. Unfortunately, right after you finish talking with him in the steam room, an Assassin appears and automatically kills him.

Notes
- Mortimer asks him to not wear his mask on purpose so people won't know what is behind the masks of the real society members.
- No matter if you even have a mine placed before you talk to Chauncey and end the conversation, the assassin still kills him and then the mine or explosives explode. So the assassin has no detection basically when confronted by a mine before killing Chauncey.
- It is not even possible to save Chauncey by killing the assassin quickly. As soon as Chauncey closes dialogue the steam room door opens. Quickly closing it causes the initial attack from the assassin to fail, but after a few seconds the assassin will simply shoot him through the door. Even attacking and killing the assassin before this second attempt will simply result in Chauncey dropping dead from a scripted effect.
Appearances
Chauncey appears in Fallout: New Vegas.
Bugs
- Targeting Chauncey during the quest "Beyond the Beef" can cause a crash on PC. And he can die in the pool of the hotel.
- Sometimes just talking to Chauncey in the steam room during the quest "Beyond the Beef" can cause a crash on PC, it might happen because you have companions following you in the same room or because you looked or talked to him before 4pm. <edit-I spoke to him with no companion or prior introduction and it crashed-EDIT- even just leaving the steam room after the encounter it has now crashed 2 times...>
- Field Report (PC) during the quest "Beyond the Beef": It crashed every time I tried to talk to Chauncey having the dog companion Rex at my side due to the King's quest to get the dog a new brain. When I ordered Rex to stay outside the steam bath at the pool in the bathing house, the games crashed, too. So I went through the next door entering the Casino area. There, I was able to order Rex to stay. Re-entering the steam bath, I could talk to Chauncy. When I killed the upcoming assassin with bare fists, game crashed in VATS mode (maybe randomly) (I read a mag to increase weaponless battle before). So I killed him being not in VATS mode, which worked. Back at the pool, game crashed (randomly) when the mag buff expired. After quick-loading it didn't crash. This area in combination with the mentioned quest seems to crash at all (time) points. quick-save after every successful action. Good luck.
- Field Report (PC) verification of above bugs. After Chauncey entered the steam room, nearly any action would cause the game to crash. I tried with and without Rex as a companion and experienced crashes when I would try to talk to Chauncey as well as when trying to leave the steam room. My crashes all occurred between 3:30 and 3:50pm game time. Gave up on this quest after 10+ crashes.
- Field Report (PC) I have the same problem, though no Rex or other companions in the area.
- Field Report (PC) I had the same problem over and over. Here's what I did. Arcade was my companion. While Chauncey was walking towards the room I left the bath house and had Arcade wait for me by the hotel rooms. Then I went back in, found the door to the small room closed, opened it and Chauncey was sitting on the right (he had been sitting on the left every other time). Then I talked to him, he died, and I beat the assassin to death with a cane (was heavy melee). Had no problems.
