Fallout tidbits 48-2009

Welcome to another list of links to various articles all over the web concerning Fallout games. If you want to propose a link to be included in the next tidbit post, simply post it in a comment under this one.

Game Informer has compiled a list of top 200 games of all time. Fallout 3 is #65 and the original Fallout is #117. You can find the full list here. Game Informer itself has a bunch of blog posts about the list and selection process.

IGN concluded that Fallout 3 is the third best Xbox 360 game of all time (the list is probably a bit premature, though):

Destructoid has an editorial about being evil in games: The wrong thing: How low can you go?. Fallout 3 is used as one of the examples.

Bitmob has a list of best and worst glitches in Fallout 3:

Fallout 3 also won the Game of the Year title in the German MTV Game Awards.

Fallout 3 360 Avatar gear coming this week

The XBLM is getting some new Avatar clothing in the form of Fallout 3 related clothing coming November 26th. There's a couple items going up for sale like a Vault 101 jumpsuit, some Bethesda T-shirts, and the most notable, the Vault Boy suit and Head, which in my personal opinion is the creepiest with its "I'm starring into your soul" eyes, also the Vault Boy suit is only available for male avatars, the others swing both ways though.

  • Vault 101 Suit -- 240 ($3)
  • Bethesda Game Studios Shirt -- 80 ($1)
  • Fallout 3 Ringer Shirt -- 80 ($1)
  • Vault Boy Shirt -- 80 ($1)
  • Vault Boy Suit -- 240 ($3)
  • Vault Boy Head -- 80 ($1)

Fallout tidbits 47-2009

I decided to start posting collections of links to various articles about Fallout games from around the web in the form of weekly posts, just like our weekly digests, which are concerned with news about this wiki. Reviews will also be collected here rather than in separate posts. If you want to propose a link to be included in the next tidbit post, simply post it in a comment in the most recent one.

Here are some recent ones.

Critical Gamer, apparently oblivious to Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas and Interplay's Project V13 being in production, writes about ideas for the future of the Fallout franchise:

Destructoid has a curiously titled "The wrong thing: Finger relief = dead GF?!" editorial about the role of choice in modern games:

And Legend of Zelda, a Zelda fansite, has an article on what Zelda could learn from Fallout 3:

BigDownload features a retrospective look at Fallout 2 in its Boot Disk feature.

Weekly digest 47-2009

After unanimous feedback from the community, another user has joined the ranks of administrators. Gothemasticator's main interest is removing erroneous trivia from articles. Thanks to him, you won't run into statements that super mutants are a reference to Gears of War and that the Plasma pistol is a reference to Halo that often.

Meanwhile, another administrator, Itachou, has marked himself as inactive on the list of administrators. Hopefully, the inactivity will only be temporary.

Winterheart has also informed us that he has gotten a bot flag approval for his bot Agricola, which will be updating interwiki links between English, Polish and Russian versions of The Vault.

Jeremski has recently become the Polish Vault's second bureaucrat (in addition to myself). I wish him luck with the project, which is the largest version of Fallout Wiki after English.

And, just as a reminder, you are all welcome to help any of the many foreign language versions of our wiki, listed below. If you'd like to star…

Interplay files 10-Q

Interplay has filed their quarterly 10-Q report with the SEC. It includes Interplay's comments on its legal battle with Bethesda over the rights to the Fallout franchise:

It also includes information of Interplay's current financial situation:

Personally, I hope that Herve Caen finally sells the company to someone actually competent. Maybe Brian Fargo will buy it back, for personal satisfaction and for Interplay's better brand recognition than inXile's? After all, he said that he always considered Interplay to be his creation, and considered himself to be temporarily "in exile".

Pizza place uses Vault Boy. Bethesda: "not a good idea"

A Reddit user posted about the image of Vault Boy being used by a Billerica, Massachusetts pizza place in their menu. Joystiq decided to promptly inform Bethesda about the infringment on their property and was told:

Well, I for one hope that the pizza place will just get a cease and desist order, although you never know with Bethesda's trigger happy lawyers. The restaurant's owner probably didn't even know that the image used by the guy who designed the menu for them was owned by a company that employs one of the largest law firms in the world.

Bethesda ask questions and demands admissions

Bethesda and Interplay are in dispute again. This time over what the pre-hearing discovery regarding the Bethesda v. Interplay case over Fallout franchise rights, that will take place on Monday, November 16, should be about. As before, we have obtained the court filings regarding that.

The lawyers of both parties want to meet with the judge to discuss this issue. If Bethesda gets their way, these are the interrogatory questions that Interplay will be told to answer:

If the answers will also be made public, the ones to questions 9 and/or 10 will be the ones that I'm the most interested in reading. Number 15 refers to fan-created mods that Interplay added to the latest version of the Fallout Trilogy pack, which the Asset Purchase Agreement does not allow.

And these are the facts that Bethesda wants Interplay to admit:

Requests 10-12 are based on Bethesda's utterly false belief that the Fallout Trilogy pack was first published in 2009, while in fact the first compilation with that name was publi…

J.E. Sawyer talks about fine tuning RPGs

Fallout: New Vegas lead designer J.E. Sawyer talks on his blog at Obsidian forum about issues concering fine tuning the systems and content in cRPGs, something that he's currently doing with some of Fallout 3 mechanics.

Here's an excerpt:

At work, I am often directly involved in an aspect of game design that not all designers really deal with: system and content tuning. This is the process by which system rules and content are adjusted to produce a specific effect for the player. E.g. you want the player to feel like he/she really gains a great advantage when he/she gets the raccoon tail in Super Mario Brothers 3, so you space out the frequency of raccoon tail powerups and you make sure that the raccoon tail's flight powers allow access to useful/valuable areas.
RPGs are often difficult to tune for a few reasons:
  • There are a lot of statistics
  • Many of the statics are derived/connected to other statistics
  • There are subsystems that govern access to various abilities (e.g. class systems, racial ab…

First Project V13 screenshots

Thanks to an anonymous, but reliable source, I have managed to acquire the very first screenshots from Project V13, which everyone knows is a Fallout Online MMORPG even though Interplay is not allowed to say it because of its legal struggle with Bethesda. As you can see, they show a ruined city, some supermutants and a hero with a 13 on his back. These screenshots were actually submitted by Interplay as court evidence to show that the game is in full production already.

I also changed the concept art in the previous newspost to non-watermarked versions.

Another batch of V13 concept art

Duck and Cover managed to get their hands on some previously unreleased Project V13 (the Fallout MMO that Interplay can't name as such because of its legal battle with Bethesda) concept art. Unfortunately, DAC's admin King of Creation decided to add huge, lame watermarks in the middle of each pic.

Update

Fortunately, KoC forgot that I also know the very same person he got the images from, and I just uploaded non-watermarked versions for your viewing pleasure.

Update 2

The "Power Armor" concept art has now also been released with the title "Badass Armor" at Interplay's Project V13 concept art forum.

More original Vault Boy art on eBay

As we already reported, Brian Menze decided to sell some of his original Fallout 2 Vault Boy drawings on eBay. He has now posted the second batch: Defender and Sword of Despair as well as Demon Spawn and Guardian of the Wastes. The auction ends on November 19.

If you did not bother to read the previous post and wonder why the faces are missing, here's an explanation:

Brian Menze sells his Vault Boy art on eBay

Brian Menze, the artist who drew all the new Vault Boy art in Fallout 2 (the original Fallout ones were drawn by Tramell Isaac), and who is now working on Fallout: New Vegas, decided to sell some of his drawings on eBay. The first ones to go are Scourge of the Wastes and Weapon Handling as well as Grave Digger and Villified.

Looks like the first two have already been sold, but hopefully there will be more coming. They went for the extremely low prices of USD $28.00 and $52.05 - Brian really should have told The Vault and NMA first before putting them up for sale.

Bethesda denies Trilogy pre-existence, Interplay creates an alternate universe

Thanks to Kevin from the Copyright in the Internet Age blog, as well as another, anonymous source, I managed to get access to all of Bethesda's filings regarding the Bethesda v. Interplay court case.

In the original complaint, Bethesda not only claims that the name Fallout Trilogy for a compilation sold in the United States and containing Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics is misleading and cannibalizes on Fallout 3 sales. They also claim that around August 2009, Bethesda became aware of compilations of Fallout games distributed under the titles Fallout Collection and Saga Fallout in other countries. "Upon information and belief" Bethesda alleges that Interplay began packaging, advertising and promoting these packages after Bethesda's launch of Fallout 3.

While a lot of Bethesda's arguments in the filings are reasonable, this claim is entirely false. Saga Fallout has been sold in Poland by CD Projekt since 2004, and the White Label Fallout Collection has been available in the UK since 2006, while a pr…

Weekly digest 45-2009

In the past weeks, we've been working on making our content easier to navigate and use. To achieve that, two areas have been worked on: overview pages and infobox header links.

Most of our readers and editors probably know overview pages like Fallout 3 weapons or Fallout 3 quests which are among the most-visited pages on this wiki (see also Did you know that... below). Overview pages help with comparing content and finding content if you don't know the exact name of what you are looking for. While Fallout 3 content was and is pretty well covered in that regard, the older games' content was not, a situation we have tried to remedy. As a result, a lot of new overview pages like Fallout 2 creatures or Fallout Tactics robots and computers have been created. Of course, missing overview pages for Fallout 3 were also added such as Fallout 3 holodisks and notes or Fallout 3 paper notes.

The second improvement concerns the little links above infobox titles (e.g. "Fallout 3 weapon"). Previously most …

Homemade Fallout 3 Shishkebab

A Flickr user by the name of Co.Pirate has been posting some pics of a homemade Shishkebab he's been working on, still a work in progress, and is probably one of the best replicas of a Fallout 3 weapon since the replica of AER9 laser rifle made a couple months ago. So far it looks like it's going along great, you can see the most recent photo to the right, and is making sure to get every detail he can in it.

The Future of Single-Player RPGs roundtable at 1UP

1UP hosts a roundtable featuring Bill Roper (Cryptic Studios), Alan Miranda (Ossian Studios), Marcin Iwiński (CD Projekt) and Feargus Urquhart (Obsidian Entertainment) about the future of RPGs.

Fallout games are mentioned a lot in the discussion, from Fallout 1 to Fallout 3, which is not surprising given that Feargus Urquhart worked on Fallout, Fallout 2 and his studio is now working on Fallout: New Vegas, and that Marcin Iwiński's CD Projekt is the owner of Good Old Games, which sells the classic Fallout titles.

For example, Iwiński says:

John Carmack to make an iPhone Fallout game?

Several early designs for a Fallout game for the iPhone have been pitched and rejected in the past at Bethesda Softworks. However, now it looks like John Carmack of id Software, which has recently been acquired by Bethesda's parent, ZeniMax, has an idea for it that might get made.

Carmack told Kotaku that, while it's nothing official yet, he has an internal proof of concept made for a Fallout iPhone game. Both Carmack and Bethesda's Todd Howard are fans of the platform and any iPhone game based on Bethesda's IP will likely be made as a joint project between id and Bethesda.

Carmack said that he will likely be personally involved in making the game, although currently he is too overloaded with work on other games. "At the very least I'm going to be providing code," he said.

Fallout 3 Wins Ultimate GOTY Award from Golden Joystick

Recently, the 27th Annual Golden Joystick Awards were held, with an extraordinary 1,223,646 votes being cast, making it officially the most popular game awards in the world. The most interesting part of it, however, is that over a year from its release date, Fallout 3 is still going strong in the awards department, only showing the massive following that the game has had (sorry 1 and 2 die-hards).

These are the awards that Fallout 3 received from GJ09:

*First Place for "Ultimate Game of the Year"
*First Place for "PC Game of the Year"
*Second Place for "Xbox 360 Game of the Year"
*Second Place for "Rampage Soundtrack of the Year"
*Runner-Up for "Playstation 3 Game of the Year"
