The Future of Nukapedia

Howdy folks. Some of you may know me, for those that don't, I'm Gunny. I was pretty active here from 2011-2018. Due to some recent events, there's been some changes here at the Fallout Wiki (Nukapedia and The Vault). This blog is intended to inform everyone what the future may hold.

First, as you can see, there are a number of initiatives already being worked on to improve Nukapedia. I'd like to give some background: after the loss of one of our bureaucrats, two different discussions began. One discussion was initiated by Fandom, where they invited a large number of active editors to a community round table discussion. Among the topics discussed was a presentation by Fandom on a big drop in google ranking of quite a large number of our articles. Some articles fell so far in google ranking that articles archived on The Vault were ranked higher. A large number of the pages affected also exhibited a dramatic reduction in size. As you can imagine, this is a big problem. A couple of editors…

Fallout 76 PTS Update, June 4, 2021

Bethesda released an update to the ongoing Public Test Server (PTS) for the upcoming Fallout 76 update Steel Reign. The most notable changes were the removal of unyielding as possible legendary power armor effect as well as eliminating the ability for the Pepper Shaker to drop as explosive. And as promised, they added a stash box to the new APC survival 'tent' skin that was released last week for Fallout 1st subscribers. In the quality of life category, floater grenades are now droppable and sellable.

Many users had issues with the Bethesda launcher crashing during the download. Various fixes included aborting the download and doing a 'scan and repair' or by switching the lauguage preferences in the launcher to another language, aborting the download again, switching back to English, aborting again, and then manually triggering the update. If that fails, deleting the PTS install and reinstalling seemed to also work.

For a full list of changes, please see the article here. You can get caugh…

Bethesda Games Studios expands into Austin

Some news from Bethesda today. The headline of their news release says they've "expanded" into Austin, however, all is not as it seems.

What is now Bethesda Games Studios Austin was yesterday known as "Battlecry Studios", a subsidary of Zenimax Media LLC. For those of you who need a refresher on the Zenimax empire, Zenimax owns publisher Bethesda Softworks, who in turn owns Bethesda Games Studios. So rather than a new studio, this is more than a rebranding.

Battlecry Studios had failed to produce anything of note. It was founded in 2012 initially to work on Freemium and microtransaction games. Its flagship game was also to be known as BattleCry, but rather than release games Battlecry has merely released staff to the unemployment line. So this rebrand is probably part of a major change of direction for the studio, and I'd expect to see BattleCry join the big "Cancelled Games" junkyard.

Bethesda Games Studios Austin will be headed by Doug Mellencamp, who judging from his Linkedin profile …

Bethesda E3 Conference

Its the Mooooost wonderful time of the year. Well, in June it it will be at least, the Bethesda E3 Showcase is here again. Here’s the announcement trailer.

The Trailer doesn’t tell us much, except perhaps that Bethesda have spent far too much time doing arts and crafts. But some of the figures definitely look fallouty.

The streamline this year is “Creating something special”, which suggests some sort of major announcement, and Bethesda has expanded to 2 Bethesda-branded studios (Rockville and Montreal). We’re not expecting new Fallout (its not our turn), and last year Todd did say there were other large projects they were working on before TES6, and has said that these are “bigger than anything we’ve ever done” and “something different”… and have been looking for experts on "Freemium" games for an AAA title in Montreal... So could this be the start of something new?

What do you think it is?

We have tried to send in some Canadian spy into their Montreal offices, but apparently corporat…

Bethesda News - Fallout GOTY, more Dishonored goodness, and a Wolfenstein sitcom

Some interesting announcements have hit our press release inbox this week. Lets take a look at them - Fallout Game of the year, a new Dishonored game, and a Sitcom from Wolfenstein 2...

Return to the Wasteland on September 26 with Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition. With all the latest gameplay updates (including Survival mode), graphical enhancements, the ability to play Mods for free on PC and consoles, plus all official add-ons included, this is the ultimate way to experience the award-winning post-nuclear adventure from Bethesda Game Studios.

Fallout in the Steam summer sale

Once again, it is gamers favourite time of year to flock to Steam and see what is is up for sale. Courtesy of The Courier NCR for life spotting Fallout: New Vegas for $2.50, I have done a little bit of investigating and the entire Fallout Series is on sale until the 5th of July.

All base games* are reduced by 75% and expansion packs are cut in price by 40%. The best deal by fair listed is the Fallout Bundle, which includes Fallout 1 and 2, Tactics, the Fallout 3 Game of the Year, Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition, and Fallout 4 and its Season Pass for just over USD $60.00.

If you want to fix your back catalogue or have been waiting for a good deal on Wastleland Workshop, now would certainly be the time to consider buying.

Bethesda E3 Showcase 2017

It's less than a week until the Bethesda E3 Showcase. This will be Bethesda's third ever E3 briefing. So what can we expect? What do we know? And why do we care?

Bethesda has always loved dropping major hints on us fans regarding their future game announcements. And of course they had to keep the tradition going this year too! This year the press invitation featured a cartoon image of a theme park titled "Bethesdaland." The theme park feautures many different zones based on various Bethesda games like Fallout, Doom, Prey, etc. Two areas however are listed as "coming soon" and "under construction."

Earlier this year Todd Howard hinted that they have 3 major projects on their agenda. The cartoon image suggests that 2 of these major projects will be announced at the event. But most people are interested in what the third project may be. If we are to use the cartoon image as a reference, then that means that the third project won't be announced this year. So what is the third major project? …

Fallout Cascadia: 1 year of work done! But how much more to go?

1 year ago, work started on Fallout Cascadia, what seems to become one of the most promising Fallout 4 mods. So far, a lot of progress has already been achieved (see anniversary trailer below). Fallout Cascadia is planned to deliver nearly eighty square kilometers of land centered around Seattle proper. It will contain several large settlements such as the capital of the Republic of Cascadia, Cascade. Fallout Cascadia takes places decades after previous Fallout games, in the year 2329.
Sadly, under the current console mod restrictions, it will only come out for pc. If the mod resitrictions for consoles would be softened up in the future however, consoles may still get the mod as well.

Fallout 4 weekend

Bethesda have just released an email advertising that Fallout 4 will be free to play this weekend (25th-28th May) only. For anyone who has a steam account or Xbox Gold, now would be a good time to have a play around and pick the game and its downloadable content up for up to 67% off.

Update 05/26/2017: I have now seen the Steam offer and can confirm that Fallout 4 is 67% off and the Season pass has been reduced to 40%. Individual DLC packs have not been reduced and remain at full retail price. If I get confirmation of the Xbox prices I will update these as well.

Update 05/27/2017: Apologies for the comments being disabled, not sure how/why that happened, but they are now open again.

New season of Nuka Break coming soon

  • 1 Trailer and incoming release
  • 2 Final Trailer, Fallout: The Wanderer
    • 2.1 Season 1
    • 2.2 Season 2

Recently, Wayside Digital (formerly known as Wayside Creations) released their final trailer Fallout: The Wanderer, for their latest fan series in the Fallout universe. For those new to Wayside Digital: Wayside Digital is the non-profit that brought us the excellent Fallout: Nuka Break series, a very well known Fallout fan series that's popular enough to get an own Wikipedia page and even an in-game reference in Fallout: New Vegas. Two years ago, they ran a kickstarter for their new season that raised over three times the set target, totalling at $66,625. We are currently in touch with the makers of the series and we will share more details as soon as we get them. In the mean time, I can only warmly recommend to watch the previous seasons (again).warning: watching Nuka Break may cause series addictions. Nukapedia cannot be held liable for this.

Bethesda working on two larger, one smaller, project

In news that will certainly fit in the "Water is Wet" category, Some site called Glixel (apparently they're related to Rolling Stone Magazine) is reporting that Bethesda are indeed still in the video game industry, which will certainly be of interest for those whom had worried that they'd instead moved into the Agriculture industry. These projects are apparently in addition to Skyrim for Switch, and Fallout 4 VR.

This really shouldn't be surprising to anyone. Bethesda - specifically Bethesda Game Studios - has two studios - one in Rockville (near DC) and one in Montreal. The idea that a business might still actually be doing what that business does to make money isn't exactly a surprise; and given that they have two locations that they're working on two major projects shouldn't be a surprise either.

Zenimax in partial court victory in Oculus/Facebook case

Ars Technica is reporting that Zenimax has had a partial victory in their court case against Oculus (and therefore Facebook)... Zenimax won't be crying too hard over the "partial" part, they're still taking home the grand prize of $500 Million. Why do we care? Well this case is probably the reason why Bethesda announced Fallout 4 VR for the HTC Vive, and not the Oculus.

At the heart of the case was the Oculus VR gaming headset itself. As Zenimax put it in their submissions, when Zenimax and Oculus started working together on the device, there was little more than a screen to the now famous VR device. With no head-tracking, no software, not even a strap to put the screen to your face, the oculus would have likely been just another piece of vaporware, as emails from famed inventor Palmer Luckey showed him admitting that he did not have the skills to get the device into a marketable state.

Zenimax obliged by performing much of the development, and ported some of their games to the device …

Layoffs at Obsidian

Sad news coming out of Obsidian HQ today. The New Vegas developer is laying off some staff from its Armored Warfare team as the publisher for this title has decided to bring some of the work in house.

This highlights some of the dangers for those of you looking for careers in the Video Games industry. Studios expand, contract, and fall as their games do. Companies who solely develop games, like Obsidian are at the whim and mercy of their publisher "partners". Others doing less glamorous work for sub contractors who work only when there is work - between projects they're left on their own.

Obsidian will continue to work on the project, but our best wishes go out to those who are getting the "enforced vacation", and hope you'll all be gainfully employed again real soon.

PS4 Mods are coming afterall

Some news from Bethesda. They are releasing mods for Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition afterall. They are also adding in support for the PlayStation 4 Pro while they're at it. There are two catches however. First, Fallout 4 mods are coming after Skyrim's release, which will include mods at launch. Second, you can not use any external assets with PS4 mods, only the game's native assets. So, no new 3D models or textures are coming.

Wasteland 3 Announcement coming soon

Some big news from InXile. Wasteland, the series that lead to the development of Fallout will be getting a third instalment.

Much like the second instalment and other InXile productions, Wasteland 3 will be crowdfunded to begin with, however this time there's the promise of more - the possibility to get more than just rewards, but a possible share of the profits.

The planned ask this time is $2.75 Million, you may remember Wasteland 2 raised in total just under $3 Million so the goal is ambitious.

We'll know more October 5th, when the title is officially announced 8am Pacific (11am EST, 5pm CET).

Mods are not coming to PS4 - For now at least

Bethesda has released the following statement on PS4 mods today

It seems that this is the closed book on PS4 mods for now, the problem being down to Sony wanting to control, or exclude certain content rather than any technical issue.

This also appears to close the book on Skyrim Special edition, and I would not be suprised if this will effect Bethesda's consideration of which formats Fallout 4 VR might appear on.

Zenimax v Oculus, Facebook and John Carmack

Some suprising news is emerging from the court case brought by Zenimax against Occulus. They’ve expanded their case so its not just targeted at the arm of Facebook, but they’re also suing the founder of Oculus (Palmer Luckey), their CEO (Brendan Iribe) and former head of ID and former Zenimax employee John Carmack, accusing the latter of being a thief.

At this point you might be thinking what does that have to do with Bethesda? Well, you might remember back at the BE3 conference Fallout 4 VR and Doom VR were announced for the HTC Vive, rather than Oculus. This lawsuit is why - Bethesda is a Zenimax company. But that still make you wonder what Zenimax have to do with the development of the Oculus, and why they’re suing. Well, according to Zenimax’s submission, the short answer is: everything.

This is weighty, so we will be including a summary at the end.

(Note: This narrative is taken from the Zenimax submission to the court. We are making no judgement on its accuracy or the truth of…

Follow up - Proving a point about the New Orleans hoax

A common complaint about the Fallout New Orleans hoax are claims that the applicant "must" have paid for the registration - and paid a lot.

So we set ourselves a challenge. Could we replicate the results of this troll without paying a cent?

Conditions of the test

  • We'd do a wordmark registration, rather than a logo, because this is already requiring more effort than it was worth
  • We'd put an application through the "Fast Track" system, and another not through the fast track system, to see if there was any practical difference
  • At no point would we make any payment
  • We would include information in the application to make it obvious that its a bogus registration, including names such as "fakey-Mc-Fakerson" and customer reference of "Fake". If that shouldn't ring alarm bells about the fakeness, nothing will.

How did we do, well here are our results, the fast track application:

As you can see, this is pretty much identical to the New Orleans registration. The Application supposedly fulfilled fast tr…

New Orleans? New attempt to fool us more like

You might see some rumours around the internet claiming that Bethesda have registered a trademark in Europe.

And indeed, if you search the EU trademark database, you'll find this:

Looks real doesn't it? How could it possibly be a fake if its on the trademark database?

Easily.

Look down at the owners section:

You're telling me that Bethesda is so poor they can't pay for the registration?

The EU Trademark database is a known favourite tool of those fake announcement trolls. Anyone can put anything they like in it, and OAMI will list it just long enough for people to be fooled by it. Since the troll doesn't have to pay anything, he doesn't lose anything for doing so, he just gets all the lolz.

If you don't see Bethesda register a trademark in their home country's trademark database, at the USPTO, then you should assume its fake. This advice goes for any other video game trademark rumour you see - if it isn't in USPTO, where the troll has to put up money to get in the list, then you should t…

Still No PS4 Mods

Months after their promised launch date, we're still awaiting mods to arrive on PS4.

Today Bethesda tweeted this:

Pete Hines, head of Marketing at Bethesda previously tweeted this on the subject.

Not a lot to go on, but this Eurogamer article gives us some clues where the hold ups might be:

Whilst the third wouldn't absolutely prevent a launch, the first and second are technical issues that do need to be solved.

So, the issues do appear to be technical quirks related to the PS4; and the lack of updates on the matter appear to be down to Sony.

Bethesda E3 Roundup

Bethesda Rocked E3 quite literally with a performance from Blink 182, but attendees to the BE3 confrence weren't there to see the aging rockers, or hear from their new album, but to see what upcoming Bethesda Softworks titles we can expect over the next year.

First up was a return to Deathmatch carnage with Quake Champions. Promising multiplayer action that suits all skill levels, and will be available for PC. Details were scarce, with more promised at QuakeCon, which seems appropriate enough. First Person shooter fans were also promised some more Doom action, with improvements to SnapMap, a DLC pack "Unto the Evil", and for those unsure about dipping their toes into Doom, access to the First Level for free this week only.

Arkane weren't set just to impress with November's Dishonoured 2, but also had a new title to tease us with - Prey. This promises to be a reboot of the series, with tests being run on a spacestation being interupted by an extra-terrestrial threat. Fallout's own C…
