Canterbury Commons
From The Vault
| ||||||||||||||||
Canterbury Commons is a town in the Capital Wasteland located on the eastern edge of the map, north of the DC Area. It is a little north of Vault 108 and southeast of the Temple of the Union. Reference ID is 38a52. A proclaimed "trading hub" with few inhabitants that has, to their discontent, become the battleground of two self-claimed "superheroes": the AntAgonizer and the Mechanist.
The town is built on top of a high hill, and consists of a couple surviving pre-war buildings amidst the ruins of several other buildings. It is primarily made up of a single main street, containing Dot's Diner (where most of the townsfolk hang out) and Uncle Roe's house (an old, semi-collapsed town-hall building where Roe and Derek live). Dominic and Machete's house and a Brahmin pen can be found off to the side of the main street near the rear northern entrance to the town.
Merchant Caravans regularly appear at the town's front entrance to the east around a large circular cul-de-sac.

[edit] Inhabitants
Canterbury Commons was initially founded by Uncle Roe as a trading hub for the Merchant Caravans. The town has a total population of 5:
- Uncle Roe - founder of the town.
- Joe Porter - owner of Dot's Diner.
- Dominic D'Ellsadro - a retired mercenary that guards Canterbury Commons against raiders.
- Machete - Dominic's fellow guard.
- Derek Pacion - Uncle Roe's young nephew.
- Sergeant RL-3, one of the possible companions, can be found patrolling the Merchants circle at the western entrance to Canterbury Commons if he is dismissed.
- The Mechanist was a mechanic in Canterbury Commons named Scott Wollinski. He went mildly insane after The AntAgonizer's ants destroyed his "girl" Protectron robot.

[edit] Merchant Empire
Canterbury Commons, being the self proclaimed "trading hub" of the Wasteland, is one of the places where the Caravan Merchants will stop, immediately west of the actual town area. As such, an unmarked quest involving the Merchants called Merchant Empire can be undertaken for specific rewards as well as permanently increasing the stock, barter caps, and repair skills of each separate merchant.
When talking with Uncle Roe, (who initially gives you "The Superhuman Gambit" quest), you can ask him about organizing the Caravan Merchants, which will give you an opportunity through dialogue to invest in the four different trade caravans found across the wasteland. Once a first investment has been made, Roe will provide you with a map showing each stop the caravans make, and the paths they take to get there.
- Crow - Armor
- Crazy Wolfgang - Various (High Repair Skill)
- Doc Hoff - Chems/Meds
- Lucky Harith - Weapons/Ammo
[edit] Loot
- Grognak the Barbarian - Carried by Derek Pacion (pickpocket required).
- Dean's Electronics - Inside Dominic and Machete's House on a desk in the room to the right as you walk in.
- Highwayman's Friend - Unique tire iron, inside Dominic and Machete's house (shouldn't count as theft if taken).
- Bottlecap Mine - Inside Dominic and Machete's house on a workbench shelf in a large room also containing beds and gun cabinets.
[edit] Notes
- Moira Brown was born in Canterbury Commons, but currently lives in Megaton. She is related to a quest The Wasteland Survival Guide.[1].
- Creatures such as Radscorpions and even Deathclaws can spawn dangerously close to Dot's Diner where the majority of the town can frequently be found, leading to nearly everyone being killed. As such, it's recommended to start The Superhuman Gambit by speaking with Uncle Roe as soon as finding the town. Completing the quest is less of a priority as the player can speak with Derek Pacion to receive the reward and end the quest regardless of if everyone else has been killed.
- Concerned players can reverse-pickpocket Power Armor, better weapons, and Stimpacks into the inventories of the town's inhabitants, increasing their survival odds against random enemies (although there's relatively nothing that can be done to save them from an unforeseen Deathclaw attack).
- After the initial battle between The AntAgonizer and The Mechanist, some of their minions (Ants or Robots) might glitch and be left standing there forever. They do not attack unless provoked but no dialogue will be available between them and the player.
- It is possible to skip the quest 'Super Human Gambit' if desired by killing either The Mechanist or The AntAgonizer as soon as you arrive in town and first witness their small skirmish. It won't look like they're taking damage until they get to the scripted sequence of attacking each other but eventually they will die (crippling their legs can help as they eventually run at the end of the "face off"). Uncle Roe will give you 200 Bottlecaps (400 with a successful speech challenge) afterward for your part. (Note: Reverse pickpocketing a mine or grenade will ALWAYS kill them if successful, even if in the middle of their scene. In this case, the scene proceeds as usual.)
- It is also possible to skip the entire dialogue between The AntAgonizer and The Mechanist on at least the PS3 version. When approaching Canterbury Commons the player can shoot either The AntAgonizer or The Mechanist from a distance resulting in both parties returning to their hide-outs. The parties will not be hostile to the player and they will quickly return faster than the player can follow them.
- If you manage to kill both The Mechanist and The AntAgonizer before meeting with Uncle Roe, he'll make a somewhat comical comment about how you just waltzed in and took both of them out like that. Taking out only one gains a similar comment, about coming in, taking one out, and scaring off the other.
- As stated, some of the superhero's minions will still be there after the two have left, or are killed. If The Mechanist robots are left, this could grant you somewhat "infinite" ammo, as they will respawn, and drop ammo and scrap metal each time. (Tested on 360)
- Inside Ernest "Uncle" Roe's House there are local inventories for the traveling merchants. Crow and Crazy Wolfgang's Local Inventories seem to spawn an unlimited number of pencils. Taking items from the Local Inventories counts as stealing and will result in loss of karma. (Tested on 360)
- Instead of having to follow the caravans along the route, you can simply wait just outside of Canterbury Commons to see all of the traders. Just stand near the edge of the town, by the tree, and wait two hours to change the type of caravan.
- A Mr. Gutsy unit stands guard on the road near the large cul-de-sac. It seems that it is replaced with a Sentry Bot if the player invests in the caravans.
[edit] Trivia
- The use of the town "Canterbury" is due to its use in the book 'Riddley Walker'. Set in a post apocalyptic nuclear wasteland, the haven city of Canterbury is the focus of the characters' escape.
- Dot's Diner is a reference to the Computer Animated TV series Reboot, which had a Diner of the same name run by Dot Matrix.
[edit] Appearances
Canterbury Commons appears only in Fallout 3.
