I give out flowers. Every petal is peace, and the stem is unity. Or are the petals unity and the stem peace? Oh no, I don't remember! Do you want one?

Calder is an adolescent member of the Unity,[1] a true Child of the Cathedral. He resides in front of the Cathedral in Fallout.

Background[]

The teenaged Calder is posted in front of the Cathedral as a flower child, handing out Unity roses to passers-by.[2] He picks the flowers himself from a grove across town,[3] and seems to be friends with the nightkin.[4] He is a polite, if insistent boy who is only starting to study the tenets of the Children. As such, he has a very limited understanding of their dogma, boiling it down to worshiping the Master and preaching about peace and unity.[5] He's not actually supposed to discuss anything with strangers he gives flowers to, but is easily swayed by charismatic or soft-spoken people,[6] due to his natural tendency to run his mouth.[7]

Calder studies under Father Lasher, suffering vicious lashings that are supposed to bring him closer to understanding the Master's truth. Calder is absolutely terrified of Lasher and anything that might cause him to become angry.[8] As a result of this "education," he's associated disbelief with pain, leading him to form a fervent belief in the Cathedral,[9] along with trauma bonding with Lasher: While he is aware of the pain Lasher dispenses, Calder simultaneously loves him as a literal father figure, believing that he's the only person who loves him.[10] He's ambivalent towards Lasher's superior, Father Morpheus, although he wishes that he wasn't so loud when preaching.[8]

Dane, the raving servitor[11] kept in the tower, pities him greatly. However, due to the torturous consecration[12] or baptism[11] process Dane suffered, he is too frightened and confused to help. He desperately implores the Vault Dweller to kill Lasher for abusing the "poor little Flower Child."[13]

After the Vault Dweller destroyed the Cathedral on March 3, 2162, they may have later visited the ruins and encountered Calder, sobbing and screaming a vow of revenge.[14][15]

Interactions with the player character[]

Interactions overview[]

This character has other interactions.

He offers the player character flowers that he picks himself.

Other interactions[]

  • In addition to receiving a free flower, the Vault Dweller can learn about Lasher's abusive practices from Calder and receive a hint about the Unity's plan of wasteland conquest. However, the player character must have a Charisma stat of 6 or more and pass a Speech check to get anything concrete out of him. Being abusive towards him also tends to terminate dialogue prematurely.
  • If the player character is a Childkiller, Calder will immediately start shouting for help. At this point, the player can choose to admit to it (initiating combat) or try to intimidate or persuade Calder that they're not the person he's heard about. Both options require a Charisma of 6 or more to succeed.

Appearances[]

Calder appears only in Fallout.

Behind the scenes[]

Judging by the script and the text, Calder was supposed to survive the Cathedral destruction and appear on the destroyed map, swearing vengeance against the Vault Dweller when talked to. However, this was cut before release. What remains of his post-explosion interactivity is a barely implemented dialogue script with only one dialogue node and broken replies. It's so broken, in fact, that it's possible to trigger it by having the Childkiller reputation active on the character.
