The flamer that burns twice as bright burns half as long. All weapons have +3% chance to Critical Hit, but equipment condition decays 15% faster.— In-game description.

Built to Destroy is a trait in Fallout: New Vegas.

Effects[]

Taking this trait grants a benefit of a permanent 3% increase to Critical Chance and a penalty of a permanent 15% increase to the rate of degradation for a weapon's condition, i.e. weapons will jam and/or break at a faster rate.

Notes[]

  • The weapon depicted in the Vault Boy icon is the light machine gun.
  • This trait has no apparent downsides for players who utilize only thrown weapons (such as throwing spears) and explosives.
    • Note that while many explosive weapons do not depend on condition (thrown or placed explosives) to be effective, these same explosive weapons do not feature any bonus critical damage, making this trait useless for someone who uses a lot of thrown explosives, such as frag grenades.
  • Critical Chance is affected by weapon condition, so keeping the player character's weapons in a good condition is important to benefit fully from this trait.
  • Using bare fists (i.e., no weapon at all equipped) will still cause the critical hit chance to be applied.
  • With the Lonesome Road add-on, ED-E can repair your equipped weapon by a factor of 25% once a day for free, though it requires finding one Eyebot upgrade circuit board and gaining the first rank of the Camarader-E perk. With a 35 Repair skill check, the factor of 25% can be increased to 35%.
    • Additionally (or alternatively), by having Raul as a companion, all equipment (weapons, armor, and clothing) gets a 50% decrease to the rate of degradation via the Regular Maintenance perk. If one completes his companion quest Old School Ghoul by convincing Raul to retire from being a gunslinger, Regular Maintenance can be upgraded to Full Maintenance which buffs it up to 75%, completely eliminating the penalty from this trait as long as Raul remains an active companion.
    • All that said, going to places where companions from the Mojave are not allowed to follow, like all of the add-ons' separate locations, will restore this trait's penalty.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The trait description is a reference to a well-known proverb: "The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long."
  • The trait's name is a double entendre; the trait helps the Courier destroy both enemies and their own weapon.
