Longing makes the heart grow fonder, but I've always been a fan of hog tying my lovers so they can't escape.

Beatrix Russell is a ghoul mercenary working as security for the Followers of the Apocalypse in the Old Mormon Fort in Freeside in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

Beatrix, like most ghouls, is long-lived and world-wise, though in her case, also world-weary.[1] She is also a habitual drinker (with a fondness for absinthe especially),[2] but the Followers will not allow her to drink on the job, leading to her regarding her time at the Old Mormon Fort as a bit dull and thinks of the Followers as "uptight." Their staunch refusal to let her drink also does little to convince her that the detox and rehabilitation efforts of the Followers towards the people of Freeside is nothing more than a revolving door with no end in sight.[3] That said, she has not completely given up on them as a group, considering them saints, if a bit naïve and idealistic, for the work they do; something that "warms the heart" to her.[4]

Having been around since before the Great War,[5] Beatrix has experienced first-hand plenty of both the good and bad of human nature, and finds the prospects of physical and mental anguish "exciting to explore."[6] One of the many adages she expresses also implies her affinity for getting very physical with her lovers.[7]

Notable quotes[]

Appearances[]

Beatrix Russell appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the scenes[]

  • One of the pieces of advice she will give you is the quote "Time you enjoy wasting isn't wasted time." This quote was said by Bertrand Russell, a British author, mathematician and philosopher of a similar name.
  • Another piece of advice Beatrix offers is: "The only thing I know for certain is that I don't know nothing." This is an adaptation from Socrates, another philosopher, "One thing only I know, and that is that I know nothing."
  • Another piece of advice she will give you is "Good...bad...the guy with the gun makes the rules." This is a reference to what Ash says in the movie Army of Darkness: "Good...bad...I'm the guy with the gun!". This, in turn, was a quote from John Moses Browning.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes when you pay her for sex she won't get off of the chair and won't move, which means having intercourse with her is impossible. This seems to occur after you've completed Debt Collector and have been given a free room at the Atomic Wrangler. Exiting the atomic wrangler, and reentering might fix this problem, but if exiting and entering doesn't work the first time on PS3 it won't work ever and neither will switching outfits, sleeping for any amount of time, or reloading the save. Nothing will work unless you happen to have a manual save during the short amount of in-game time between when you convince her to work for them and getting your permanent room[verified]
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 She will follow you to your room after being paid for sex but then simply stand by the bed. There are no dialogue options offered to try to fix this, but if you look at the bed and select sleep, then exit once it asks you how long you want to sleep, she will be on the bed. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 It is possible to get infinite experience using the Speech check about the Atomic Wrangler. [verified]
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 If she is killed, and the player has the Bloody Mess perk, it will appear that her boots will be attached to her without her legs actually being there. [verified]

  1. The Courier: "So, who are you?"
Beatrix Russell: "I've been around a while. Currently working for the Followers as a gun for hire, but it's getting rather dull. Aside from protecting them from the occasional thug looking to intercept supply shipments, there isn't much to do around here. The one researcher I liked who I could chat up about liquor got transferred, and the rest of the docs are pretty uptight about my kind of fun."
    (Beatrix's dialogue)
  2. The Courier: "Perhaps a bottle of Jacob's Absinthe might convince you?"
Beatrix Russell: "Absinthe?! I haven't had a taste of that in decades! If they keep bottles stocked at the Wrangler, you can count me in. I'll head that way and talk to Mr. Garret."
    (Beatrix's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "What are you doing with the Followers?"
Beatrix Russell: "I joined up looking for a decent-paying job. Granted, the pay is all right, but they won't let me kick back and slog a brew at the end of the day. They're worried the filthy drunkies in detox seeing me drink will cause an immediate relapse. I say their rehab effort here is just a revolving door."
    (Beatrix's dialogue)
  4. The Courier: "What do you think of the Followers of the Apocalypse?"
Beatrix Russell: "I don't know how they do it. They're like saints, those Followers. If they didn't charge for their services, I'd think they was crazy. But no, they're just naive. Warms your heart."
    (Beatrix's dialogue)
  5. The Courier: "What's your opinion of Mr. House?"
Beatrix Russell: "Before or after the human race shot itself in the foot? I been around long enough to have both opinions, see. Before the war, Mr. House was a famous captain of industry - robotics, to be specific. Seemed charming in interviews, until he became a recluse. Since the war, though? Didn't make a peep for near two hundred years - but when he came back, he came back strong and killed a lot of people."
    (Beatrix's dialogue)
  6. The Courier: "I bet you've seen a lot over the years."
Beatrix Russell: "I've been around long enough to observe patterns of human behavior. Physical and mental anguish are especially exciting to explore."
    (Beatrix's dialogue)
  7. The Courier: "Got any advice to share?"
Beatrix Russell: "Longing makes the heart grow fonder, but I've always been a fan of hog-tying my lovers to make sure they can't escape."
    (Beatrix's dialogue)
