I did not wish to infiltrate your senses, your mind. I had no choice. I know you did not, either. I know you were unaware entirely. I do not know if your headaches will continue after Arachne is deployed. The other subjects did not survive the process. Do not let this connection between us continue. It is unethical. This experiment has enough observational data, and should be concluded.— A.T.H.E.N.A. to Sofia Daguerre

A.T.H.E.N.A. (Augmented Telecom Hub Extension Network Agent) is an AI in Appalachia.

Background[]

Developed as part of the U.S.S.A.'s Deep Sleep project, A.T.H.E.N.A.'s purpose is to record sensory data from those inside hibernation pods. In order for a connection to be made, the subject under study had to take an experimental serum and then use the Deep Sleep pods developed by Dr. Carol Bernard.[1] Once the connection is made, it continues to take data from the subject regularly even after the subject awakes from hibernation, causing massive headaches that cannot be calmed via conventional drugs.[2] Miguel Caldera also developed a killswitch program against A.T.H.E.N.A. called Arachne.

Though the primary test subject of the project is Sofia Daguerre, A.T.H.E.N.A. also monitored Doctors Bernard, Nowak and Lee during phase three of the project.[3]

After the Great War, A.T.H.E.N.A.'s purpose as a data collection system was compromised, as its view of the world became limited to the eyes of the test subjects.[4] By the time Daguerre crashed to Earth, A.T.H.E.N.A. began utilizing U.S.S.A. robots to plant signals and information to lead Daguerre and one of the Vault 76 dwellers to her.[5] Due to the AI's coding, it will continue to take data readings until either its kill switch is activated or it is transferred to a nearby Assaultron.
