You know what? I hear the last Overseer tried being reasonable about things, and you killed him for his efforts. I think I'll skip the "reasonable" thing and just kill you now.

Allen Mack is a resident of Vault 101, a fervent isolationist, and its potential overseer in Fallout 3.

Background[]

The head of the Mack household, Allen is a powerful presence in the Vault, and believes that it's a good life, sealed forever underground. Anyone who goes out of their way to mess it up is a sworn enemy of his.[1] He is extremely protective of his family,[Non-game 1] When James entered Vault 101 and became its resident physician, Allen was deeply against taking him or his child in, believing that the Vault should remain shut.[2] If it wasn't for the calming influence of his wife, Gloria, he would likely be even more aggressive.[Non-game 2] He certainly resolved to replace Alphonse Almodovar, should anything happen to him.[Non-game 1] Until then, he focused on his work down in the maintenance tunnels,[3] while addicted to unspecified "pills" that James simply refused to give him at one point.[4]

His redeeming feature is his love for his family. While strict, Allen genuinely loves and cares about his children: When his son, Wally, had his tenth birthday, he managed to coax Andy the Mr. Handy to perform magic tricks, and organized a game of Hunt the Mutant in the Vault's atrium.[5] The Lone Wanderer wasn't invited, however, likely due to Allen's disdain for their father.[6] This attitude seems to have been passed on to all the younger Macks. Susie, same age as the Lone Wanderer, has resolved never to let them become a friend.[7]

When James escaped from the Vault 19 years later, Allen's worst fears were confirmed. He fought against the radroach infestation, personally saving many lives,[8] including Stanley Armstrong.[9] With the passing of Gloria in the wake of James' escape, he became a menace not to be toyed with: He buried his emotions deep, instead teaching survival skills to his children "just in case,"[Non-game 1] and supporting a forceful approach to sealing the Vault and disposing of the rebels.[10][11]

Relationships[]

Allen Mack is the husband of Gloria Mack, and the father of Wally, Steve and Susie Mack. His father-in-law is Stanley Armstrong. He also has two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Armstrong and Mary Kendall.

Quests[]

Fo3 Allen Mack Bang

Allen Mack banging on the window.

  • Escape!: While never interacted with directly, Allen is briefly met on the way out, in an inaccessible common room, pounding on and shouting through the glass to alert others to the Lone Wanderer's presence. Gloria Mack is in the background.
  • Trouble on the Homefront: If the player chooses to kill the overseer during their escape, Allen Mack rises to the position, as he was involved in saving numerous people. However, instead of opening the Vault, as expected, he decided to seal it permanently, leading to the uprising. Mack cannot be peacefully convinced to open the Vault, and the only options are either killing him or breaking the back of the rebellion for him. Mack will reward the player with the modified utility jumpsuit, then kick them out of the Vault.[12][13]

Inventory[]

* Only during Trouble on the Homefront if he becomes the overseer.

Notable quotes[]

Appearances[]

Allen Mack appears only in Fallout 3.

Behind the scenes[]

During the quest Escape!, it is impossible to enter the room where the Macks live (without console commands). Viewing Vault 101 in the G.E.C.K. reveals that Mack's "room" is just a short stretch of the corridor without an entrance. It is impossible to enter his room due to the fact that he is scripted to become the new overseer should the current one die.

Bugs[]

  • One of his combat lines include "The Overseer will hear about this!", even after he becomes the overseer.
  • Even if Mack becomes the overseer, Amata will still refer to the overseer as her father.

  1. Allen Mack: "You! This is your fault! You and your stupid father! He had to go and leave, didn’t he? He had to mess things up for everybody!"
  2. Lone Wanderer: "You shut up about my dad! Just shut up!"
Allen Mack: "What's the matter, runt? Did I hit a sore spot? I always knew we shouldn't have taken him in, and it looks like I was right all along. A perfect example of why we need to keep the Vault shut! Now, I'll make this easy for you. You can walk away and let me handle the Vault, or I can put you down like a rabid dog. Your choice, kid."
  3. Allen Mack: "Ahh, it's my stupid ankle, doc. Sprained, broken, I don't know. Slipped on some grease in one of the maintenance tunnels."
  4. Allen Mack: "Come on, doc. Just one more month, that's all I'm asking for. Without those pills, I… I just don't know what I'll do. Please, I'm begging you."
  5. Wally Mack: "Not as cool as my party though. Remember how my dad got Andy to do magic tricks? And we all played Hunt the Mutant in the Atrium?"
  6. Wally Mack: "Oh, right... you weren't invited to my party. Too bad, man. It was really fun."
  7. Susie Mack: "We're not friends. We're never going to be friends. Got it?"
  8. Officer Armstrong: "Believe it or not, it was Allen Mack who really stepped up in the crisis. Wally's dad really saved some lives, and got named the new Overseer for it."
  9. Wally Mack: "You shoulda seen my pop, he personally saved old Stanley! But guess you wouldn't know what it's like to have a hero for a dad, would you?"
  10. Allen Mack: "Any vault resident seen associating with the so-called "Rebels" will be detained, questioned, and disciplined appropriately. Order WILL be restored. Discipline WILL be restored. Vault security personnel have been authorized to use deadly force if necessary. Don't let it come to that. This vault will be one big, happy family again. One way or another."
  11. Allen Mack: "You just couldn't let us live in peace, could you? You couldn't have a home, so you decided to destroy ours."
  12. Lone Wanderer: "I'll take your G.E.C.K., and whatever technology you can spare."
Allen Mack: "G.E.C.K.? We never had one of those things in the first place. We weren't supposed to ever leave, remember? But take this Modified Utility Jumpsuit. I guess the rebels thought it would be useful when they left. Obviously, that won't be happening now. Congrats, you saved the Vault. Now, get out."
  13. Lone Wanderer: "I'll take scientific equipment. That's one thing you've got plenty of."
Allen Mack: "'Sure, fine. As it turns out, Brotch modified himself a utility jumpsuit for survival in the Wastes. As if he was ever getting out there. Here, it's yours. Don't say I never repaid a favor. Now, get the hell out of my Vault."

Wally Mack's father is a man not to be trifled with. He is overly protective of his family ever since the death of his wife (mother of Wally Mack, Susie Mack, and Officer Mack). He's taught basic survival skills to his children but isn't overly fond of showing emotion. Should Overseer Almodovar ever become incapacitated, Allen has vowed to take over the running of Vault 101."
