My feet are sore. It's a long way to the Lincoln Memorial

Alejandra Torres is a freedwoman working with Hannibal Hamlin as a teacher at the Temple of the Union in Fallout 3.

Background[]

Alejandra is a quiet woman of great intelligence.[Non-game 1] She was captured by slavers at 17 and sold into slavery. Her enslaver forced her to have sex, and seemed to like her well enough to provide her with an education, including the ability to read and write, history, mathematics and basic science. After he married, his new wife demanded that Alejandra be sold. After four years in captivity, Alejandra was sold again, this time to Hannibal Hamlin, who promptly returned her freedom.[1]

A free person again at 21, Alejandra joined Hannibal, becoming the group's teacher, historian, and tinkerer.[2] She helps educate the group, starting with basic literacy. Caleb Smith is one of her students, and would like nothing more than becoming someone more significant, but Alejandra maintains a professional distance.[3] She also works with him on reconstructing the Gettysburg Address, gathering references so that Smith can restore the inscription.[4] She is also trying her best to accommodate Bill Seward, one of the victims of slavers who found refuge at the Temple.[5] In general, she is not fond of violence, but works with Simone Cameron nonetheless.[6]

Alejandra is fiercely loyal to Hamlin and fully believes in the dream of once more building a world in which all men are created equal and free.[7] While she trusts him with her own life, she also believes that everyone should make up their own mind about following him.[8] Her goal once the Lincoln memorial is liberated is to build a shrine to Abraham Lincoln[2] and establish a school to educate other people who successfully escape slavery.[9]

  1. The Lone Wanderer: "So, you used to be a slave?"
Alejandra Torres: "Yes. For four years. I was young and pretty. I don't need to tell you what my duties were. He liked me enough to educate me. I learned reading, history, math, and even some science. When my master married, his wife insisted I get sold. Hannibal bought me and freed me."
    (Alejandra Torres' dialogue)
  2. 2.0 2.1 The Lone Wanderer: "What do you do here?"

  3. Alejandra Torres: "Caleb, have you been practicing your reading?"
Caleb Smith: "I've almost finished that book, Alejandra. Maybe you could tell me what it means tonight. By the fire. Together. Alone."
Alejandra Torres: "I don't think that would be a good idea, Caleb. How about we talk about it tomorrow morning? Maybe during your lesson."
(Caleb Smith and Alejandra Torres' dialogue)
  4. Hannibal Hamlin: "Have you found any references to Lincoln's Memorial? Caleb is still struggling with the translation."

    (Alejandra Torres' dialogue)
  8. The Lone Wanderer: "Who is this Hannibal guy, anyway?"
Alejandra Torres: "He's a man with a dream. If you want to know more than that, you should ask him, not me. I trust him with my life, but you'll have to make up your own mind."
    (Alejandra Torres' dialogue)
  9. Alejandra Torres: "I hope you succeed, stranger. I can't wait to set up a school for freed slaves."
