The abandoned area is a location which is added to Fallout 3 in the add-onThe Pitt. It is a small part of the factory that connects The Mill and the steelyard. Its only inhabitants are trogs.
It was abandoned by the raiders and slaves when trogs started moving into the area, but it's still used to get to the steelyard, so the slaves were made to construct a barrier so that other slaves could get to the steelyard safely.
While it serves as a vestibule between The Mill and the steelyard, the abandoned area has otherwise been deserted by both slavers and slaves alike in light of the trog infestation. There is a locker near the entrance to the steelyard - it can be used to store gear and lighten up for ingot runs as its' contents are indefinite and it does not reset. In a mine cart, there are three steel ingots - these are inaccessible until returning from gathering the first ten in the quest Unsafe Working Conditions, after which a Trog tears a hole in the fence.
