The .44 magnum round is a type of ammunition in Fallout: New Vegas.

Characteristics

The .44 magnum round is a high powered magnum pistol cartridge derived from the .44 special pistol round. The round was originally developed for revolvers, but with its high velocity and heavy bullet, manufacturers quickly developed lever-action rifles and carbines chambered in .44 magnum. Ancient as it is, .44 magnum still delivers quite a punch and proves to be quite effective in the field.

Variants

.44 magnum round, hollow point

Hollow point bullets mushroom and break up on impact, causing massive trauma on unarmored targets. However, this also means they break up more on impact with armor, drastically reducing the weapon's penetrating power.

.44 magnum round, SWC (hand load)

Known as a semi-wadcutter, this round has a flat-nosed bullet designed to punch clean, neat holes in paper targets. The shape also causes the bullet to expand slightly on impact, though not as effectively as hollowpoint. The bullet also retains effectiveness against hard targets, and coupled with a heavier powder load can demonstrate good armor penetration. These characteristics make it much more effective than standard ball ammunition.

Schematics for making these rounds can be obtained from Jules after passing a check for Guns (50) and Survival (60); the recipe is also unlocked if the player takes the Hand Loader perk.

.44 special round

The parent cartridge for the .44 magnum, the .44 special is a less-powerful round that shares all dimensions except case length. It is similar enough to be used in guns chambered for the .44 magnum cartridge. These rounds used to be the rarest type of .44 caliber ammunition in the game, with a single box appearing in only one location: the NCR Ranger Safehouse. As of patch 1.3.0.452 they have been added to vendor lists.
