The .44 round, Magnum or .44 Magnum round is a type of ammunition found in Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, Fallout 76 and Fallout Tactics.

Background[]

The powerful .44 Magnum round was originally developed for revolvers and then adapted for pistols and even rifles. It is a large-bore cartridge delivering a heavy, sizable bullet at very high velocities. Its excellent stopping power and range results in plenty of recoil and a distinctive muzzle blast. However, it remains well suited for any inhabitant of the wasteland needing a round capable of stopping monsters, human or otherwise.[Non-game 1]

Variants[]

.44 Magnum ball[]

Standard .44 Magnum ammunition is only used by large caliber handguns and high-powered long arms. It has high base damage, and is rare. The .44 Magnum bullets are called "large bullets" in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel.

Full metal jackets give .44 Magnum rounds the ability to pierce armor. The green-branded magazines are common compared to other .44 variants.

.44 caliber JHP[]

Jacketed hollow points are common, and will double the base damage of the .44 Magnum bullet.

.44 Magnum rounds are tipped with hollow points. Light armor can stop the bullet.

.44 Magnum, SWC hand load[]

Hand-loaded semi-wadcutter bullets will punch right through a target with their flattened noses, while shoulders built into the bullet enlarge the hole and make the resulting wound rather cleanly shaped. As a result, they provide extra damage and a light armor piercing effect, but the specialized nature of the bullets will also increase wear on the weapon.

.44 special round[]

Fo4 .44 round

.44 Special bullets are loaded identically to normal bullets; they simply lack the higher pressure load of a Magnum round. They aren't nearly as powerful as Magnum rounds, but they're also much healthier for any weapon that fires them.

.44 Magnum AP[]

These armor piercing rounds are exceptionally specialized; they deal 40% less damage, but can punch through 80% of the armor built into any of the robots in the Midwest.

Dumdum bullets are an older kind of bullet, from which the modern hollow point was derived. "Dumdum" is generally applied only to ancient, heavy rifle rounds, and is considered an informal way of referring to hollow points. How they would have faired compared to hollow points, however, is unknown.
