On October 18, 2010 Bethesda Softworks announced that downloadable content will be available for New Vegas, in keeping with its predecessor Fallout 3.

In Issue 216 of Game Informer, it was confirmed that Bethesda applied for the trademarks of the phrases Honest Hearts, Lonesome Road, and Old World Blues. All three add-ons will be available simultaneously for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

According to a since-deleted blog comment, Scott Everts was responsible for hiding DLC hooks in the vanilla game[1]. This was seemingly confirmed with the presence of a "nvdlcgraffiti" folder in the game files, containing graffiti with filenames including "nvgraffitisierra" and "nvgraffitihonesthearts", hinting at Dead Money and Honest Hearts, respectively.

Three further DLC packs are due to be released across all three platforms simultaneously in the months following the cross-platform release of Dead Money.[2]

Pre-order bonuses

Players pre-ordering Fallout: New Vegas from selected retailers were granted access to special pre-order bonus packs, containing exclusive equipment to make the earlier stages of the game easier. The list of bonus packs is as follows:

Dead Money

Main article: Dead Money

Dead Money involves working alongside three other NPCs to find the treasure of the Sierra Madre Casino and adds new achievements, perks, terrain, enemies and decisions for the player [3] , as well as raising the level cap to 35 [4]. It was released on December 21, 2010, for the Xbox 360, at a cost of 800 Microsoft Points and was released on PlayStation 3 and PC platforms on February 22, 2011. [2]

Honest Hearts

The textures in the "nvdlcgraffiti" folder textures sharing the filename "nvgraffitihonesthearts" read:

"Where's New Canaan, anyway?"
"The Burned Man Walks!"
"Joshua Graham Lives!"

The DLC will release on April 19th 2011 however this date is not set in stone. Unlike the first DLC which was a timed exclusive, Honest Hearts will launch on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC simultaneously.

The existence of Honest Hearts as a future DLC was seemingly confirmed when it was found on January 7th that the name had been registered as a trademark by ZeniMax. Additional hints can be found in the game files for Dead Money located under "FNVDLC02" and containing a snowglobe from Zion National Park.

Unlike Dead Money, it (and all subsequent add-ons) will be released simultaneously on all three major platforms (Xbox 360, PS3, and PC)[5].

J.E. Sawyer occasionally tweets about Honest Hearts[6][7].

Old World Blues

Nothing has been officially announced about this add-on.

In Dead Money, Father Elijah describes the Big Empty as "a treasure box, a scientific graveyard of Old World misery". Additionally, mentions of the Big Empty act as a trigger for the Things to Come! challenge. The Big Empty was a location that was scrapped from Black Isle's cancelled Fallout 3.

Chris Avellone has since set his location on his Twitter profile to Big MT, Mojave, placing the Big Empty as a location within the Mojave Wasteland and teasing its possible appearance in a future Fallout: New Vegas add-on.

Lonesome Road

Main article: Lonesome Road

Nothing has been officially announced about this add-on.

The phrase "Lonesome Road" appears in-game at the canyon wreckage, on graffiti in close proximity to other graffiti reading "The Divide", "You Can Go Home Now Courier", several figures resembling a backwards '6', and "Courier 6?", "Courier Six" being the moniker Johnson Nash used to describe the PC.

The Divide also receives a mention in possible endings for both Dog and Christine Royce's in Dead Money:

The new voice did not think of the Courier again until the battle at the Divide reached his ears. The battle between the two couriers, beneath the torn skies and the Old World flag... each bearing a message for the other. And the mutant prayed the Courier that had saved him... had been saved in return.Dead Money ending
Christine, her mission complete, found new purpose as the Sierra Madre's warden. She watched over it silently - by choice. Over time, the Ghost People came to see her as one of the Holograms. They would watch, silently, as she walked among them. At times, Christine thought of the Courier, who had kept Elijah's hand from her throat. The Courier reminded her of the other courier she had met in the Big Empty, and wondered if the two had found each other at last. She did not think of them again until she heard the legends of the Divide. The Divide, where the two messengers, the two couriers, fought beneath an ancient flag, at the edge of the world.Dead Money ending

The second courier referenced in Christine's ending is said earlier in the DLC to have "worn the flag of the Old World on his back" when he rescued Christine from the Big Empty. This fits the description of Ulysses, a companion who was cut from the game.

Future add-ons

So far, only four DLC's have been confirmed to be in development, and the second shelf (used for snowglobes from DLC packs) in the Lucky 38 Presidential Suite has four spaces for snowglobes.

According to one video game news blog[8], a source "close to Bethesda Softworks" spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity, saying that four DLC's other than Dead Money were in development as of December 2010, with two others being considered, which if approved would make for a total of seven add-ons for release over the next two years. Of the four DLC's planned for release after Dead Money, the source was said to have stated that the Courier has a "relationship" with Ulysses and that the nature of the relationship would surprise players. He also said that a future DLC would add an area to the game that players "likely thought they would never see", as well as "a personality [from] Fallout 3".

Jason Bergman has stated that one thing that will not be appearing in a DLC is the ability to extend the game past the ending[9], á la Broken Steel.
